Due to bloggers trying to release material from his upcoming album, Mr West has decided to pull this weeks' (and maybe subsequent weeks') G.O.O.D. Friday release.

He announced the news through his twitter account is rightly pissed off that despite giving out a new track each week, people are still looking to leak the album.

More drug scandals...Come on out Pete

This was actually from yesterday but I was so bored about hearing it I must've blanked it out.

Anyway, Pete Doherty has been charged with possession of cocaine following an inquiry into the death of heiress Robin Whitehead. It could've been worse for the Libertine as he dodged a supplying charge, but with his form...this could be bad news as famous people actually go to prison in the UK

Kano - "Method in the Maadness" - Review

It is clear that with your Dizzees, N Dubz and Tinchy Stryders knocking around that the landscape for UK hip hop has changed dramatically the past year. Despite this fact, Kano has always kept his head down and has deservedly achieved his place as top of the critics’ and hip hop thoroughbreds pile.
Now calling the shots and running his future, Kano’s latest album has made a clear change of direction from UK hip hop/grime. The beats are a blend of dub-step, electro, hip hop and a smidge of indie rock thrown in for good measure. The blend is the result of production that has been entrusted to acts such as: Boys Noize, Chase and Status and Hot Chip and instead of gimmicky cover-all-bases album, the result is one of the strongest hip hop efforts of the year.
Unlike many of his competitors, Kano has managed to keep the lyrical power that is often lost in translation when big beats are introduced into the formula. The opening track “2 Left: Topic of Discussion”   is a prime example of this as despite the Boys Noize produced beat...the Kano of old still has something to say.
“All + All Together” produced by and featuring Hot Chip is a standout track for the album and although it sounds like a Hot Chip song, Kano is well placed and performs with the grimey vigour for which he is known.
The true highlight of the album is “Slaves” in which Kano raps about his opinions of the current state of UK hip hop; the production is heavily based in grime but the chorus creates a contrast that is befitting of the tone of the song and the words behind it.
The only real criticism of the album is that it will likely be a victim of circumstances. Sadly the current hip hop industry does want an album like this and instead would prefer 3 club bangers and beefed out with filler; for example, “Upside” did not even chart despite a pretty solid PR run.
Despite what the industry would like, Kano has delivered a very strong album that will hopefully restore some faith in the UK hip hop community. Kano says it best on “Upside” “I’ll lose my dough before I’ll lose my soul”; a sentiment that UK hip hop fans could only wish was the norm with other artists.

Buju Banton mistrial

The "'Til Shiloh" artist has had the drug case against him declared a mistrial. Banton has been in hot water since trying to purchase 5 kilos of cocaine from an FBI informant last year.

After 4 days of deliberation, the jurors were unable to reach a decision and, as a result, Judge James Moody declared a mistrial. Banton's lawyers are claiming entrapment as the FBI informant pressured him agreeing to buy the drugs.

Banton is currently seeking bail but faces life imprisonment if the charges ultimately stick.

Detox delayed again - anyone suprised

Dr Dre has delayed his follow up to "Chronic 2001" once again. Following the leak of the obviously-unfinished "Under Pressure" featuring Jay Z there were those optimists who were under the impression that "Detox" was finally coming.

Dre is apparently holding the album back while he promotes his new money spinner product "Aftermath Cognac". To be quite honest, I have lost all hope of "Detox" coming out this year but this news comes as another blow to the loyal fans that have been waiting for what the Dr has to offer.

Oh well, we live in hope.

L.A Reid gets the sack?

theYBF.com are reporting that LA Reid (who is responsible for artists such as: Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, TLC, Outkast, Usher and Pink) has been sacked from his position as Chairman at Def Jam Records.

The talk is that the deal with Shyne was the final straw for Mr Reid and that the board of directors felt they had no choice but to kick him to the curb.

It is thought that Def Jam will likely keep this a low key affair and cite a mutual termination...either way Mr Reid's time at Def Jam is seemingly over.

Bounty Killer in a spot of bother

Dancehall artist Bounty Killer...You know, the guy from No Doubt's "Hey Baby" from back in the day. Anyways, Mr Killer is in a spot of bother regarding a woman and a hammer.

A woman turned up a police station near Bounty's appartment in St Andrews. The woman was badly bruised and bleeding and has blaimed the artist for the attacks. This is certainely not his first brush with the law; another woman recently dropped charges after a supposed similar incident. Also, he faces possession of firearm charges and also being found with marijuana (I know, I know... you get the impression that it's fine out there).

Anyways, Bounty will face a judge sometime next week to address these claims.

What a nice story before bedtime.

Street cleaners plot against Pope

Title says it all really,

5 street cleaners have been arrested in London today suspected of trying to assassinate the Pope during his visit to the UK.

The Pope is currently in the UK trying to avoid difficult issues and also trying to drum up some worshippers

Apparently only 65,000 people turned up yesterday in Scotland to see him. I've been in a bigger crowd than that to see The Chemical Brothers! Perhaps the Pope should venture into electronica?

Classic #1

So we begin,
The first classic.... Classic #1

Notorious B.I.G. – Ready To Die

From the cover, to the lyrics, to the production – everything about this album is iconic.
To truly understand the greatness of this piece of work it is most probably best to set the scene. It’s 1994 and Suge Knight’s Death Row is a hit machine; the music covered all the bases and ensured that the West reigned supreme...that was until Mr Smalls entered the room.
Easy Mo Bee and The Hitmen handled the majority of their production (with the legendary Premo offering his services on “Unbelievable”)  and the result was deep and slick affair that after all their hard work...remains underappreciated whilst lost in the New York rapper’s words. This album marked the first, and last (during his lifetime), time where we were exposed to Biggie the storyteller, the urban poet. “The Warning” is perhaps the best example of storytelling on this album; it gives the listener an almost cinematic idea of the tale being told.
The album is perhaps best summed up by the line “Made the change from a common thief, to up close and personal with Robin Leach”; as a listener you get the full spectrum...a full and rich life, from the bottom to the top... a struggle that, in one way or another, each of us can relate to.
The true value of this album is appreciated further when you consider it as a whole. The singles – “Juicy”, “Big Poppa”, “One More Chance” not only manage to sit on the same album as “The Warning” and “The What” – but manage to fit with puzzle piece precision. Even to this day I am yet to hear a better end to an album than “Suicidal Thoughts”, a sombre and macabre pondering of mortality.
It has been described as the most complete album in rap history and with the tremendous wordplay, great beats and commercial success there is not a great deal more to say that has not already been said. Instead, just sit back, listen...appreciate it...Classic #1 – “Ready to Die”
 “It was all a dream...”

VMA's tonight - Anyone bothered?

The VMA's are tonight.

Is anyone actually bothered? Numerous sources are reporting that Taylor Swift is to sing a song about Kanye West's stage invasion last year. Methinks that Ms. Swift should be a little more thankful...I mean who the hell would still care about her if this didn't happen?

Big winners will certainly include Lady GaGa but the rest is relatively wide open. Performers include Justin Bieber, B.O.B, Drake, Eminem, Linkin Park and Kanye West.

Any thoughts on tonight?

Tasty Treat #2

Ray Lamontagne and the Pariah Dogs - "God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise" - Review

For many fans of Ray LaMontagne, he can simply do no wrong. This is understandable as soon as the awkward looking American opens his mouth to release a voice that others simply dream of. His latest album “God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise” is a completely stripped effort and was produced entirely in his home with his tour band, The Pariah Dogs.

The opening bluesy track “Repo Man” is a funky delight and at the point where Ray opens his mouth, you can’t help but feel this will be a 10 song treat. A treat is a suitable way of describing this album; the songs are as deep as Ray’s work has always been and the accompanying Pariah Dogs provide a tremendous platform for his words.

“Beg, Steal or Borrow” is another standout track that evokes a calmer, more inward tone for the album; this melancholic ambience usurps the atmosphere of the record and leads suitably into “Are We Really Through?”

“God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise” does not have a stand out track as other LaMontagne albums have had; don’t expect a “Trouble” or “Forever My Friend” but if Ray is not bothered about this...why should we? Just sit back, crank it and allow that exquisite voice to surround you.

The final track, “Devil’s In The Jukebox”, sees a return of the bluesy swagger that opens the album. This song ends a strong album; an album that his fans will love whilst at the same time, pushing the envelope suitably for his artistic development.

So....2010.... Is there anything to look forward to?

With the Mercury's yesterday and the fact that summer is officially over we were wondering here at the shop whether or not there are many new albums left that we are really looking forward to. Eminem has released, Ricky Ross has released, Klaxons have released Big Boi has released, Arcade Fire have released, Nas/Damian Marley have released, Drake has released, etc, etc, etc.

I guess a lot of people are waiting for a new Outkast release and it is rumoured to be coming out before the end of the year. The Game's "R.E.D Album" is another that should seriously hurry up and get out...especially considering Dr Dre is set to reunite with the rapper and produce on the album. I am not willing to discuss Detox as I am sure a lot of people are particularly pissed off this year when we actually stupidly thought that it would be coming out. In actual fact, all we had to show for waiting over 10 years for said album is a clearly half finished effort with the Jigga Man. Here's hoping it may make an appearance soon!

So, I ask the question what has 2010 got left to offer? Or is hibernation a good call until the new year?

What are your thoughts?

So.... The XX take it

The XX have won the Mercury Music Prize 2010!

Roots Manuva Meets Wrongtom - "Dutty Writer" - Review

Roots Manuva is one of the only sure bets in UK hip hop and, unlike a lot of those who have followed in his direction, the aim remains the same... to create the albums the fans want (and not necessarily what the bank manager wants!)

Despite perhaps never being able to create another “Witness the Fitness”, Manuva has always produced solid albums that are listenable from start to finish and that have clear direction. It pleases me to report that “Duppy Writer” does not deviate from this.

Teaming up with DJ/Producer Wrongtom for this effort has created an album that is full of delightful dub beats and a summery feel that almost makes you think that the weather outside is a tropical haven instead of drizzle wasteland.

You could be forgiven for not giving Manuva’s lyrics a real listen whilst being absorbed in the summery reggae of it all. However, it’s clear that he’s lost no focus on “Chin Up” when he raps “I study my art ‘til I’m blue in the face”... a line that no UK hip hop head can argue with. This album is a great example not only of Manuva’s talent but also his versatility in his writing with “Dutty Rut” and “Motion 82” being particular highlights.

The only real weakness of the “Duppy Writer” is inherent to the whole sound of the album. Despite the fact that there is lyrical versatility the beats do tend to become samey as the album progresses. Moreover, without a real signature track for the album, it remains to be seen what impact it will have.

To sum it all up, a strong album with a strong theme that it stays true to for the duration. This album will certainly get replayed in the shop during those shitty winter nights when Manuva and Wrongtom’s dubby delight will keep the smiles going.
What are your thoughts?

Mercury Music Prize 2010

Tonight, the Mercury Music Prize will be dished out once again for the offerings of 2010. Here at the shop this particular ceremony is always highly anticipated but has a reputation of providing an underwhelming result.

Biffy Clyro receive the nod for their efforts and surely must be in with their best shot ever with the album that has pleased fans and critics alike. Laura Marling is once again well placed within the list and her wonderful “I Speak Because I Can” could also prove to be one to watch. The “Mod Father/God Like Genius” Paul Weller receives, believe it or not, his first ever nod at the Mercury’s for “Wake Up The Nation” and would prove a deserved recipient. The XX have been the critic and bookie favourite for the award but this is not often as enviable as you would imagine, with the judging panel often preferring a quirkier outcome (...Speech Debelle.... ahem). Mumford & Sons stand a great chance with the epic sounding “Sigh No More” and this award would top off a great year for the band. Dizzee Rascal’s huge commercial success “Tongue n Cheek” has received a nomination but surely this album cannot win an award that “Boy in da Corner” won back in 2003?

So the winner could be anyone...literally anyone on the list. For me, I would love to see Paul Weller win the award; however, my personal favourite album on the list would have to be “Sigh No More”. Nonetheless, we will sit and watch only to moan at the end the winner didn’t deserve it and we will never watch it again. I swore that exact thing when The Streets were robbed for both “Original Pirate Material” and “A Grand Don’t Come For Free” but, as always, I will be sitting down to watch the annual event that is the Mercury Prize.

What are your thoughts?

Is there anyone on the list that shouldn’t be there?

Anyone who has been snubbed?

Will you be watching?

Let us know!

Kind regards,

The Proprietor

The Classics

An album being "A Classic" is something that is often thrown around too quickly and often with not a lot of truth to it.

Here at the shop we are looking to put together a list of bone fide "Classics" in the hope that someday the artists will look back and, despite their other lesser awards, will be able to be safe in the knowledge that they have been given this honour.

There are a few albums that are already being considered but we'd like to know your thoughts. Are there any albums you love that don't seem to get the recognition they deserve? Do they deserve "Classic" status?

Let us know your thoughts and watch this space for "Classic #1"
