#1 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"House of Balloons" - The Weeknd

If you listen to the first track on this album (below) you get the instant impression that this sound represents a new frontier. Armed with a Burial-esque tone and mood this album is simply a joy to hear.

With the help of The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and perhaps Drake, it seems that RnB has evolved having finally learnt that soppy ballads will simply not cut it forever. Instead, a darker and more animalistic side is shown and is indicative of a strong 2012 for RnB.

Abel Tesfaye takes #1

#1 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Rolling in the Deep" - Adele and Jamie xx

It's been an incredible year for Adele but it's the Remix of "Rolling in the Deep" that takes the #1 spot in the LGB Singles of the Year 2011.

Very much in the same way that the Basement Jaxx were able to rework "Cold Shoulder", this remix showcases the superb Adele vocal with a dub/ska beat that kept it playing all year.

#2 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Smother" - Wild Beasts

A smutty, sexual, sensual sound on the band's third studio album.

#2 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Take Care" - Drake feat Rihanna and Gil Scott Heron

Jamie xx delivers a special beat from his "We're New Here" protect with the late Gil Scott Heron.

Here's Florence in the Live Lounge giving her version.

#3 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"On a Mission" - Katy B

An album that cemented a change in dance/pop music. The Mercury Music Prize nominated album features great vocals and even better production.

#3 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala" - Arctic Monkeys

Alex Turner recently told NME that he had forgotten how to create a 'hit'

Sunday, 25 December 2011

#4 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Nostalgia, Ultra" - Frank Ocean

It may be a mixtape but, nonetheless, this is definitely among the albums of the year. For the first time in years, RnB finally has something credible to hang it's jacket on.

Look for the album in 2012

#5 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Suck It and See" - Arctic Monkeys

Alex and Co back on best form with this album and take the #5 spot; an album of true progession and indie bangers.

#5 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Wildfire" - SBTRKT feat Little Dragon

An understated slice of delicious dub, producer - Aaron Jerome takes the #5 spot.

#6 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Charity Starts at Home" - Phonte

Sophisticated rap music from the ex Little Brother member. A song that epitomises the struggle for talented rappers out there... Phonte and 9th working together again is wonderful news.

#6 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"I'm Getting Ready" - Richard Kiwanuka

One of those voices that really makes you stop in your tracks. Presumably, Mr Kiwanuka is for a big year in 2012.

#7 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Let England Shake" - PJ Harvey

Harvey took home the Mercury Music Prize for the second time with this album. An album about conflict and war that had particular resonance this year.

#7 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"AKA... What a Life" - Noel Gallagher

No post-Oasis hangover for Noel on this track... "I'm gonna take that tiger outside, for a ride"

#8 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"50 Words for Snow" - Kate Bush

A wintry concept album that saw Bush characteristically continue to push the boundaries (the Stephen Fry and Elton John features also are a big tick in the 'plus column')

#8 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"We Found Love" - Rihanna feat Calvin Harris

One of the biggest tracks of the year that saw Rihanna and Harris link up for an Autumnal-floor-filler.

#9 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"A Creature I Don't Know" - Laura Marling

An album that truly is beautiful to listen to. A wise head on young shoulders and voice of such longing.

A remarkable album.

#9 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Cinema" - Benny Benassi Feat Gary Go

A cheeky number that snuck under the radar but soundtracked the Summer.

Tuesday, 20 December 2011

#10 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"James Blake" - James Blake

This bloke topped the album list of 2010 and did not disappoint with his debut offering.

#10 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Gabriel" -  Joe Goddard feat Valentina

Let's start as we mean to go on... a haunting track that saw Goddard step into the solo arena following his incredible work with Hot Chip.

Beastie Boys to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Now, it's late and I really should be in the land of nod but I have just received an email holding some incredible news.

The Beastie Boys are to be inducted with this year's round of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group, that are still going strong, have finally received the honour. Despite the rumours, Rakim and Eric B did not make the cut this year but it is fair to presume that the call is not long away.

Simply awesome news to cap a difficult year for the iconic hip hop collective.

The induction ceremony is to take place on 14th April 2012 in Cleveland. Other artists entering the hall this year include: Guns & Roses, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Freddie King and group Small Faces.

Martin Boyce takes home the Turner Prize 2011

Sculptor - Martin Boyce has been awarded the 2011 Turner Prize during the ceremony held at the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead... the first time that the ceremony has taken place outside of the Tate.

Boyce beat LGB favourite George Shaw, Karla Black and Hilary Lloyd to the prestigious contemporary art award and was awarded the £25,000 prize money by photographer - Mario Testino.

Happy Mondays NOT reforming

Despite rumours that have been circulating today, Happy Mondays have no immediate plans to reunite for a tour.

The Sun ran the story after Sean Ryder cancelled a gig this coming Wednesday in Leicester stating that the legendary band were to reunite in honour of their classic album "Pills n Thrills and Bellyaches"

Unsurprisingly, this was The Sun getting their reach on and stretching a nothing story to it's limits. However, the relationship between Sean Ryder and his brother Paul is apparently "better than it has been for a long time".

Come on guys... I would love to see Bez freaky dancing to open before The Stone Roses at Heaton Park next year!

Arctic Monkeys to turn down a move to the majors

Following the final release from their initial deal, it seems that Arctic Monkeys will snub advance from major labels in order to sign with Domino once again. "Suck it and See" was the fourth and final album due contractually with the Monkeys now musical free agents.

The Sheffield band have courted the interest of Sony and Columbia but, according to the band's manager - Ian McAndrew, Domino's offer will be straight to the top of the pile.

McAndrew stated:

"We have not entered into discussions with any other prospective label although we have received plenty of enquiries. Domino has been a great label for the band and afforded us fantastic support and therefore will be at the front of any future discussions we may have about further albums."

Reminds me of that old maxim... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Ludacris - "Bada Boom"

Ludacris showing why he's probably one of the more overlooked rappers in the industry...

However... dissing Big Sean and Drake - that's like kicking two puppies in a bag.

Heavy D funeral gets the Obama treatment

With Diddy, Jay Z and Will Smith all in attendance, Heavy D received a well deserved send off.

The service which took place in Mount Vernon, New York, took place on Friday 18th November 2011. During the ceremony, Rev Al Sharpton read out a note that had been sent to D's daughter - Xea... a note that was prepared by no other than President Barack Obama.

The message read:

"We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers."

RIP Heavy D

Drake's "Take Care" leaks

The eagerly anticipated follow up to "Thank Me Later" has leaked over a week earlier than the release date.

"Take Care" leaked earlier on today with the subject trending on twitter within the hour.

Drizzy was quick to speak on the issue stating simply that we should "enjoy it"

Keep checking here for the official LGB review which will likely follow in the common days.

Beyonce feat. J Cole - "Party" - Official Video

It seems that for the official video of "Party", Andre 3000 has morphed in another rapper and delivered a far worse verse.

When the video surfaced, people started tweeting their hands off in outrage that 3000 had not been included in the video and Roc Nation's - J Cole was put in his place.

However, it appears that nepotism had no place here. Rumour has it that, as was the case when Big Boi and Lil Wayne wanted 3000 on their respective albums, 3000's record label made the block meaning that his verse and image could not feature in the video.

The watered down video is below:

Stone Roses reunion official

Moments ago, the much debated reunion of The Stone Roses was made official.

The band will play a pair of gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park on June 29 and 30 before heading out on a world tour.

It has also been announced that they will be performing new material

Let the madness commence

Stone Roses reunion set to be announced today

Now before I start, I must declare an interest here; for me, The Stone Roses are one of the greatest bands of all time and the chance to see them live would be incredible.

However, one of the greatest things about the band has been their, seemingly militant, refusal that a reunion would ever happen and therefore preserving the history of the music. Frontman, Ian Brown has spent a substantial amount of his solo career denying that such a reunion would ever happen.

However, Reni has cryptically indicated that he would not be involved with any reunion so it remains sketchy as to what lineup will be wheeled out.

I was skeptical, to say the least, when I heard the newest additions to the rumour mill. However, whispers grew louder and with it seeming that today's press conference will confirm two shows in Manchester next year.

There is nothing better than a band refusing the millions offered to reform and roll out the hits; but, does that make me any less excited? Does it bollocks!

Keep it LGB for any updates

Vybz Kartel launches skin bleaching cream

As reported on LGB on 25th January 2011, Dancehall star - Vybz Kartel has been dabbling with skin bleaching products with shocking results.

In another twist, Vybz is set to launch a range of male skin bleaching products for others wanting to trial his 'look'.

The range is set for general release last month and it would seem that Vybz is looking for a side hustle just in case this murder charge doesn't disappear! A press release of the products is below... it looks like someone is bottling it in a shed out the garden.

The Muppets to cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

The Muppets are set to cover Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in their upcoming movie.

The Muppets Barbershop Quartet will also be covering "Fuck You" but, I would imagine they will go with the cleaner "Forget You" as to ensure it retains a U status.

The movie, which as you can probably guess - I cannot wait for, features Lady Gaga, Ricky Gervais, Jack Black and other cameos.

Dave Grohl is set to cameo as Animals replacement in the band as he attends anger management therapy... Great stuff.

Drake announces "Take Care" pushed back

Drake has turned to his blog - October's Very Own to announce that, the follow up to "Thank Me Later", "Take Care" is to be pushed back to 15th November 2011.

The reason for the delay is due to Drizzy awaiting clearance on 3 samples. Drizzy posted:

“My options were to take the songs off and make the birthday release happen, or to take an extra couple weeks to get the paper work right and give you the album they way I NEED you to hear it,” Drake explained. The choice was clear as day for me. November 15th you will get "Take Care" the exact way I created it with no trimmings.”

For the USA readers... this also means that the tour is to be pushed back.

It's that time of year again...

The shortlist for the highly coveted Mercury Music Prize is to be announced in a small ceremony in London.

There have been some great British albums this year with PJ Harvey, Adele and Wild Beasts all surely set for a nomination.

Past winners Elbow and the Arctic Monkeys also stand a chance of achieving a nomination.

Jay Z two songs into new album - Frank Ocean to collaborate

Jay Z has announced that he's already two songs into his new solo album.

At a listening for "Watch the Throne", Jay explained that the new album would be different but not weird.

He also confirmed that Odd Future's - Frank Ocean is a collaborator of one of the completed songs.

As of yet, no title and no indication of release any time soon.

"Watch the Throne" gets release dates

Noel Gallagher announces new album

This was left out of the previous post with good reason.

Noel Gallagher has announced that his debut solo album - "Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds" will be released on 17th October 2011.

Shows to accompany the release will take place in the following lucky cities:

London; and

Noel confirmed that he will play Oasis songs at the gigs and that a larger tour would likely follow.

Well that brightens up a shitty rainy day doesn't it?

Noel Gallagher finally opens up about Oasis split

If your anything like me - when the Oasis split was first announced, I thought this was just another squabble between brothers who had simply been in each other's pockets for too long.

It wasn't until many months later that I fully began to accept the possibility of Oasis really being gone for good.

Flash forward - Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher's constant comments to the press, Noel's disappearance

... At long last, Noel has stepped onto the battlefield.

Noel explained that before that fateful night in Paris that ended the band, the original issue was centred around Liam's intention to advertise his clothing label - Pretty Green in the tour programme. The issue was that Liam had no intention in paying for said advertising space.

In the press conference, Noel finally put his side of the story across stating ultimately that he had not had enough of Oasis, he had simply had enough of Liam.

Want to know what Liam thought of the press conference? Check his twitter.

Ain't Nothin' But A G Thang 2: Clwb Ifor Bach - Cardiff

The second of this fast growing hip hop night took place in Club Ifor Bach on Bank Holiday Sunday with LGB in attendance. It was night that started, continued to be and ended in a very messy way indeed.

The night was a huge success with the attendees being treated to a diverse mix across the hip hop genre from the late 1980's up to the early 2000's. The tunes on offer were all classics... and not classics in the overused 2011 way... classics the way it's meant to be.

Particular highlights included hearing Bubba Sparxx - "Ugly" with Friday (Ice Cube/Chris Tucker) playing on the big screen (in mute) behind the DJ's... you won't be getting that anywhere else!
So in future, if you ever see this night on the cards... get involved.

It definitely gets the LGB seal of approval.

Good work Clwb!

Odd Future cancel London show

Odd Future have cancelled one of their upcoming UK gigs which was due to take place at London's Relentless Garage.

The gig was scheduled as a double-header which was due to take place on 29th April 2011.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the group will perform the gig which is scheduled earlier in the day but with the later gig being cancelled, things don't look good.

No reasons have yet been given for the cancellation.

"Tha Carter IV" artwork and release date

"Tha Carter IV" will hit shelves on 21st June 2011.

The artwork is below and follows the theme from the previous effort.

An overdue explanation

This week has been a slow week to say the least. It started with a bang with me finally pulling my finger out and sorting out my Glastonbury ticket. In the end, I really couldn't resist!

I will be coaching from the glorious city of Cardiff so if any LGBers will be are doing the same... get involved.

Apart from that... the week has just been a hectic one

Service resumes this evening

You have been neglected... This is madness

Weezy and another Carter III lawsuit

Lil Wayne is the subject of another lawsuit relating to "Tha Carter III"

This time it's "Lollipop" co-writer - Dezzle who has alleged that the rapper has still not paid him for the work he did for the lead single from the platinum selling album. The co-writer is seeking a reported $20,000,000 in damages. This news come mere months after Weezy and producer Bangladesh settled the issues surrounding the "A Milli" beat.

Wyclef shot

Wyclef Jean has been shot in his native Haiti.

The ex-Fugee was shot in the hand when a gunman unloaded on the vehicle Clef was riding in. Thankfully, Clef was not injured too badly and was discharged from hospital later that day.

Between earthquakes and shootings... Haiti's tourism has taken a bashing to say the least.

MF Doom and Thom Yorke working on an album

Radiohead frontman - Thom Yorke and rapper - MF Doom are currently in the studio working on an album. The two met when Yorke remixed Doom's "Gazillion Ear" back in 2009 and have been working on a few sessions together.

Doom said that the sessions were "preliminary shit" but that they would probably be doing an album.

Any news of Doom coming back is fine with me!

"Tha Carter IV" gets a release date

It's official.

Klaxons cancel their entire Spring tour schedule

Klaxons have cancelled their entire Spring tour which includes all North American dates. The band's facebook page made the announcement citing "unforeseen circumstances".

In a bid to try and make up for the disappointment of these cancellations, the band will offer a free download of a previously unreleased song. So... a song that wasn't good enough to make the album to make up for not getting to see them live.

The Fugees have NOT reunited

Contrary to what you may have been reading today, The Fugees have not reunited.

Rumours started to fly around when Pras and Wyclef were together in support of a Haitian presidential candidate.

For future reference, until Lauryn sorts her head out and is back with Clef and Pras - the Fugees are not reunited!

L.A Reid confirmed for US X Factor

Now I really don't want to get in the habit of discussing X Factor (regardless of how addictive it can be) but I really couldn't pass this up.

Former Def Jam head - L.A Reid has been the first name to be confirmed as a judge alongside Simon Cowell.

So many names have been floating about on this one but Reid was seemingly never in the frame! Despite what you may think of him... You can't argue with his track record.

Faithless announce split

Iconic dance act - Faithless have announced their split after 15 years and 12 million in album sales. Maxi Jazz, Rollo Armstrong and Sister Bliss have been at the forefront of UK dance music and have now decided that the time was right for the good times to end.

Maxi Jazz posted the following on the website:

“After 15 years(!) and six albums(!!) I think we've probably made our collective point by now and that it's time to close the book and return to the library...

We've had, with you, the most unbelievable, epic and moving experience, stretching over years and tens of thousands of miles... joyful, exhilarating and empowering, we never for a moment thought an affair could last this long. Or be this powerful. Never thought for a moment that the end of this journey would be left to us either...

Quite naturally people grow, change and leave the things of youth behind them. You've not only brought us with you, but introduced us to y'children too! What're you like..?

The album 'The Dance Never Ends' was written and produced for you, as a thank you, but also as a goodbye.. the tour schedule has been particularly hectic as we attempt to visit as many territories as there are people who wanna see us.. And say thank you.

If I devoted the rest of my life to the task, I could NEVER thank you enough. I have memories that will still be with me in my next life. But, like when writing a song, you always just 'know' when it's finished... this is and was the "Thank YOU And Goodbye' tour and to be truthful, I really hope you just pick up the ball of your life.. And RUN WITH IT!!

Once again, whether you bought or downloaded a cd, came to a show or told your mates about us... Whether from the beginning or just last week..

Thank you.

You'll be in my heart forever. Listen for my voice in future lifetimes, I only grow in your shadow, you're the sun to me.

One Love.

And If You Don't Know, Now You Know #2

#2... Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. Not the catchiest of names but a hip-hop collective that have been tearing up the internet for the past two years. OFWGKTA have been spraying free hip-hop from their blog for 24 months and they have recently hit the mainstream. Hodgy Beats and Tyler the Creator's performance on the Jimmy Fallon show has shown that this collective are ready to make the step up. This performance on Jimmy Fallon has set the internet alight; linked everywhere and just in time with Tyler's single, Yonkers, hitting iTunes.

The crew consists of Tyler the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, Mike G, Frank Ocean, Left Brain, The Jet Age of Tomorrow (also known as The Super 3), Syd tha Kyd, Jasper Dolphin, and Taco Bennett. Their website has seen them release three mixtapes and seven albums of free material, hustling pretty hard for no financial gain. What hip-hop is about, right?

Tyler the Creator's six minute long single, Bastard, perhaps sums up what their about. A dark, simple beat is laced with arsenic-raps from Tyler who rides the beat with such ease. The latest single from Tyler, Yonkers, is really dark.

But the success and spotlight hasn't been all good news. Earl Sweatshirt, a key member of the group, has been conspicuous in his absence since they have blown up. A Free Earl campaign has begun with rumours rife that he's been sent to boarding school by his mother after she heard her lyrics.

This goes to show just how young they are. Tyler isn't even twenty whilst the oldest member of the group is 23. They have built themselves a rep they can build on for many years. They show a great sense of humour in what they do to; a recent clip of them on Funny or Die showed they don't take themselves too seriously; interviews with them show they are, essentially, kids just messing around.

But the difference is they are hugely talented. With Tyler preparing to release Goblin on a one-album deal on XL recordings, could 2011 be the year of Wolf Gang?

NME Awards tonight!

The NME Awards are tonight!

I can only hope that this year's ceremony is packed with the normal drunkeness and trouble we have come to expect. I have just been looking through the guestlist and with the names on offer it could be a news packed evening.

Buju Banton facing 15 years

We reported a couple of months ago that reggae star - Buju Banton had gotten himself in a spot of bother regarding a set up drug deal.

The subject of the deal was said to be 5 kilos of cocaine which was offered to the reggae star by an informant. The informant was paid a generous amount by the DEA to get Banton to agree to the deal before he was arrested. Banton has been found guilty of the charges against him and now faces 15 years in prison.

Banton's - "Before The Dawn" won Best Reggae Album at the 2011 Grammys but it would be fair to say that any new album could be a substantial way off.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and the acid trip album title

Anthony Kiedis has revealed that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are close to finishing their follow-up to 2006's "Stadium Arcadium".

Kiedis also announced that the album is currently being referred to as "Dr Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctions Polar Express Machine-head" which refers to an acid trip that a close friend once had.

The frontman went on to say that despite the name, the album actually represents the most focused work that the band has ever done. At this point, there is no official release date for this album.

Tasty Treat #10

Something to see in your Friday night antics; have a good weekend...

And If You Don't Know, Now You Know #1

#1... Lil B

Lil B', prolific Bay Area rapper, released a monumental mix-tape over the weekend. The Free Music Collection, contains 676 songs taken off his various MySpace accounts. He runs over 150 accounts, with 5 songs on each, making him the most active MySpace artist by a long way.

Lil B' is part of the Pack, a group of rappers who describe themselves as “based”. “Based” is another word for swag, and Lil B' is the king of “based”. Prolific distribution saw him clock up 1000 songs before he was twenty-one years old. He's released fourteen mixtapes in two years, is on his second The Pack album and his fourth independent album.

His Free Music collection caps what has been an interesting 2010 for Lil B'. His songs littered YouTube and the hash tag #swag and #TYBG were seen over and over on Twitter. He even became and internet meme; the “Thank You Based God” gracing several pictures over forums and websites throughout 2010.

Now? His all-conquering, prolific raps look set to continue with the release of his first major label album, Glass Face. He's been described as a group of rappers who are post- Lil' Wayne. Alongside the Odd Future stable of rappers, Lil' B is part of the future. 2011 looks set to be the year of Weird-O rappers.

Thanks to @BenjaminJames27 for the knowledge.

"The King Of Limbs" released early

The new Radiohead album - "The King Of Limbs" was released today despite being scheduled for a release tomorrow.

If you are after a copy, head over to

Below is the video for the first single - "Lotus Flower"

"Black Friday" - Lil Kim - Official Video

A video has been released to go with the Nicki Minaj diss - "Black Friday". Hopefully they can sort this 'beef' out and just get on with it. Finally two solid female MC's in the industry and they have to bitch with each other...smh

50 and Jimmy okay but Dre beef bubbles on

50 Cent has tweeted that the beef that was brewing between himself and Interscope head - Jimmy Iovine has been sorted out.

However, the more interesting situation between Dre and 50 is yet to be cleared up. Dre has apprently publicly snubbed the new 50 Cent Sleek Headphones and 50 is still apparently working on the release of a diss track towards Dre.

This beef is slowly getting more and more like an actual reality.
