DJ Kool Herc needs your help

DJ Kool Herc, the inventor of breakbeats and hip-hop founding father, is allegedly not in a good way and is described as "very sick". Herc apparently does not have valid health insurance and needs help to pay for the surgery he requires.

DJ Premier spoke of Herc saying that as he was a DJ and not a producer, he made little money for all the hard work he put into establishing hip-hop in the early days. Premier is urging people to donate what they can to help one of the founding fathers.

If you would like to give what you can - send donations to:

P Diddy and the $1 trillion claim - (possibly the best thing you will read today)

P Diddy is the focus of a $1 trillion claim from an ex - Valerie Turks. Also parties to the claim are Kim Porter (Diddy's ex) and... wait for it... Rodney King (yes, yes the man who got beaten up by the police back in the early 1990's).

Turks also claims that she and Diddy have a son - Cornelius, who is now 23. Then, in a ridiculous couple of sentences, claims that Diddy caused 9/11, put her son in hospital and sold a poker chip belonging to her which she says was worth "100 zillions of dollars". The $1 trillion is broken up into $900 billion in child support and $100 billion in lost earnings.

The case will be heard on 31st January so keep it here for any updates.

I bet you didn't think you would be reading that today.

Lil Wayne done with "Tha Carter IV"

There are numerous rumours making the rounds that "Tha Carter IV" is closer than we all thought... in fact, the word is that the album has been finished.

Mack Maine told XXL this week that David Banner is one of the last producers that has been recruited for the album.

The Killers to return

The Killers have announced an end to their hiatus by confirming that they will play a comeback gig at Lollapalooza in Chile.

The band have not performed together since 2009 whilst lead singer - Brandon Flowers has been concentrating on his solo album. The Killers will be added to the bill along with: Kanye West, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Flaming Lips

Chase & Status have told MTV that they have snubbed Rihanna for their next album - "No More Idols". They were given the opportunity to work with RiRi as a perk of being signed to Jay Z's - Roc Nation label but refused on the grounds that they wanted the new album to be "thoroughly British".

Clair Maguire, Tinie Tempah, Tempa T and White Lies have all been enlisted to help with the album that is a follow up to 2008's "More Than Alot".

Game talks R.E.D

Game has been speaking to Complex regarding the long awaited - "R.E.D Album" (an album that was meant to be released the same week as Drake's "Thank Me Later"). Game told the magazine that the album was still missing a lead single despite being "pretty much 95% done". He said he would wait until he heard something amazing that did not sound like anything else out there.

Game also stated that "The Kill" is likely the only song from the mixtape - "Purp and Patron", that will make the final cut.

He confirmed that he has spoken to Jimmy Iovine about the album and that he had been given freedom to pretty much determine his own release date. The album will feature the production of DJ Premo, Dr Dre and The Neptunes.

Vybz Kartel and skin bleaching

I, for one, am a big Vybz Kartel fan and hold him responsible for stopping the rot of dancehall music from the late 1990's and early 2000's. The past few years however, despite a few remixes here and there, he has largely fallen off my radar except for when a song comes up on my iTunes to brighten up my day.

Earlier this morning I read comments that Vybz made regarding skin bleaching and skin bleaching products. He said:

“This is my new image. You can expect the unexpected. I feel comfortable with black people lightening their skin. They want a different look. It’s tantamount to white people getting a sun tan.”

The reasoning is of course logical and difficult to fault but many fear that the use of such bleaching products will become more widespread.

Each to their own I guess.

Lil Wayne announces "I am Music Tour II"

Lil Wayne has announced a sequel to the “I am Music” tour which will run across numerous North American arenas. Weezy won’t be touring alone and will be accompanied by: Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Travis Barker and DJ Mix Master Mike.
Moreover, “Tha Carter IV” is also pretty close to a release with Weezy saying that the album could surface by March.
I assume that the ‘goods’ on the tour bus will be kept to a minimum considering Weezy has only recently been released from Rikers Island.

Reading and Leeds bookings are "staggeringly good"

Melvin Benn, director of the Reading and Leeds festivals, has made a statement today regarding the headliners for the 2011 festivals.

He announced that the headlining acts have already been selected and that they are "extraordinary". He went on to describe the lineup as a whole as "staggeringly good". As far as headliners are concerned, no names were offered except that the acts would not be headlining any other UK festival.

Kanye to release a new album this summer

West has gone to twitter to give some key announcements about his plans for 2011. Firstly, the video for “All of the Lights” is set to be released next week; however, he did not confirm who from the substantial guest list would be in attendance for the video. Secondly, the Jay Z collaborative effort - “Watch the Throne” is going to be released in March.
Finally (and obviously most importantly), a follow up to “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” is going to be released in the summer.
Let the madness commence!

Best DJ of all time announced

Following 4 months and thousands of votes, Mixmag have finally announced their list of the top 10 greatest DJs of all time. The names on the list are all pretty clear choices with perhaps only the omission of Armin van Buuren the only real ‘big’ shock considering his 4 consecutive “Most Popular DJ” awards and a reported 30,000,000 weekly listeners to his show. Dance music obviously dominates the much of the list with no place for any hip hop DJs. However, drum and bass DJ – Andy C managed to come in at #4

Below is the full list:

10) 2 Many DJs
9) Tony De Vit
8) Sasha
7) Paul Van Dyk
6) Ricardo Villalobos
5) Carl Cox
4) Andy C
3) Sven Vath
2) Richie Hawtin
1) Tiesto

"Louder" (Blast Your Radio Theme) - Jaylib (Madlib and J Dilla)

Below is a track from the new Madlib album which features a track from Madlib and J Dilla that never saw the light of day during their collaborative time as Jaylib. Jaylib only managed one release with 2003’s “Champion Sound” but this track was being lined up for the second album.

Madlib and J Dilla... enough said really.

The Strokes name new album

The Strokes have announced that the name of their upcoming album will be – “Angles”. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the band stated “Angles” represents the first time that the band have had an equal part to play in all aspects of the recording process.
Albert Hammond Jr said that the name comes from the fact that the songs come from “five different people” as opposed to Casablancas handling the writing individually.
Nick Velensi said that the album is the first where they worked “truly democratically” and that this new found democracy was the reason for the delay.
“Angles” is set for release on 22nd March.

Miles Kane gets Beady Eye support slot

Former Rascal and Last Shadow Puppet – Miles Kane has been given the role of support for Beady Eye’s first tour. Kane will perform songs from his upcoming solo album and is said to be chuffed to be asked on-board for Liam Gallagher’s first post-Oasis tour.
Kane will be support Beady Eye for their sold-out gigs in Glasgow, Manchester, London, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Eminem refuses to play the BRITS

Eminem has apparently refused to perform at upcoming BRIT awards because event bosses will not let the rapper know whether or not he has won an award in advance of the London ceremony. Eminem is up for Best International Male Artist and International Album but with competition from Kanye West – a win is not guaranteed.

The hope was Em would join the already confirmed – Rihanna on stage to perform “Love The Way You Lie” but with no guarantee... it seems Em is not prepared to come over.

Immediate music takes another step forward

In a bid to try and stem the bleeding of music piracy, two of the biggest major UK labels are announcing a new method for music to be distributed. Under new plans, music will be made available to purchase as soon as it has been released for radio airplay. A similar method was utilised for 2010's X Factor where people were able to download music straight after the live show.

Universal and Sony Music plan to start this immediate music system as early as next month. David Joseph of Universal said that "Wait is no longer in their [consumers] vocabulary" (I know, I know... What a tosser) and that there needed to be a legal way to satisfy this immediate need for the newest music.

Whether this will change consumer habits remains to be seen but it is refreshing to see a label being proactive about the situation instead of placing the blame with fans, file sharing websites and ISP's.

Daft Punk are not The Third Twin

The electronica duo's management have officially denied that they are linked to DJ's - The Third Twin.

Unconfirmed, rumours have been circulating that the pair have been releasing music as The Third Twin. However, a recent press release was deemed to imply that Third Twin were in fact Daft Punk... This claim has now been officially denied.

Daft Punk's management team released the following statement:

"It has been brought to the attention of Daft Punk's management that the promoters for the Arenal Sound Festival in Spain have recently issued a press release in which they claim that a band called The Third Twin is 'directly connected' to Daft Punk.

"This is completely untrue. Recent press reports are based on rumours instead of facts".

Trent Reznor wins Golden Globe

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for his work on The Social Network.

Reznor described receiving the award as surreal adding that he didn't even foresee the opportunity to score a film, let alone winning such a prestigious award for his efforts. He later tweeted "holy shit" to hammer home the surprise.

Lil Wayne gets Twitter hacked

Lil Wayne's Twitter account is currently suspended as site administrators try to address a successful hack to @liltunechi.

An unknown hacker hilariously gained access to Weezy's account and, in the process, almost 1,300,000 followers.

Suspicions were initially raised with a tweet at 50 Cent but were confirmed with a tweet sent to Soulja Boy. The hacker tweeted - "I sent a donations to your paypal, check it, I heard you got 13,000 sales lil homie, i feel bad for you! #DamnSoulja"

Soon after, the hacker turned attention to Weezy personally. He tweeted that he had withdrawal from kissing Baby and that the single, 6'7, was in homage to man that he got friendly with during his time at Rikers.

Here are some more hilarious tweets from the hacker:

@thegame you still owe me money for that My Life joint, how your family crip but you blood

Game also got perhaps the funniest tweet regarding the delayed R.E.D Album

@thegame mad his album never coming out while nicki is platinum

@JOEYCRACKTS you fat ass nigga it on when i see you

Finally, Young Money rapper Tyga also got stung concerning news that, despite his current fame and riches, his mother hasn't benefitted at all.

@tyga mom still in the hood? wtf my nigga

Kanye goes Taylor Swift on Britney

Twitter and Kanye are generally a great combination for comedy.

Kanye tweeted earlier concerning the news that "H.A.M" is number 2 on the iTunes chart as Britney Spears took the top spot.

West tweeted:

"Yo Britney, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time!"

While I am sick of Swiftgate resurfacing again and again, this was brilliant.

"Sleazy" (Remix) - Kesha and Andre 3000

Andre 3000 is certainly starting to make himself a bit more busy than he has been over the past few years. Back in late 2010, 3000 was involved with Drake, Kanye West and Fabolous on the remix to Chris Brown's "Deuces".

Well... He's back again to lend a verse to this remix.

Dave Grohl to be named Godlike Genius

Dave Grohl is to be named Godlike Genius at the Shockwaves NME Awards.

The ex-Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman will pick up the award at the ceremony in London on February 23.

Grohl follows in the footsteps of icons including: Manic Street Preachers, The Cure, The Clash, Ian Brown, Paul Weller and Primal Scream in being named NME's Godlike Genius.

Grohl told NME: "I don't think I'm godlike or a genius. It’s flattering. It's a nice thing to be acknowledged for doing something you love to do, but in truth I don't consider it a body of work because I don't consider it work."

Today, Yauch sent out a statement to clarify his current wellbeing.

Nas heading to G.O.O.D?

This is only a rumour but an exciting one nonetheless.

Rumour has it that Nas is on the verge of being signed up by Kanye West to his G.O.O.D label. The story has surfaced as Nas is continuing to have problems with Def Jam over his upcoming album and the sequel to The Lost Tapes.

With Def Jam itself with problems of it's own, it isn't out of the realms of possibility that they could cut their losses and hand Nas over to West.

We Major.
