#1 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"House of Balloons" - The Weeknd

If you listen to the first track on this album (below) you get the instant impression that this sound represents a new frontier. Armed with a Burial-esque tone and mood this album is simply a joy to hear.

With the help of The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and perhaps Drake, it seems that RnB has evolved having finally learnt that soppy ballads will simply not cut it forever. Instead, a darker and more animalistic side is shown and is indicative of a strong 2012 for RnB.

Abel Tesfaye takes #1

#1 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Rolling in the Deep" - Adele and Jamie xx

It's been an incredible year for Adele but it's the Remix of "Rolling in the Deep" that takes the #1 spot in the LGB Singles of the Year 2011.

Very much in the same way that the Basement Jaxx were able to rework "Cold Shoulder", this remix showcases the superb Adele vocal with a dub/ska beat that kept it playing all year.

#2 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Smother" - Wild Beasts

A smutty, sexual, sensual sound on the band's third studio album.

#2 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Take Care" - Drake feat Rihanna and Gil Scott Heron

Jamie xx delivers a special beat from his "We're New Here" protect with the late Gil Scott Heron.

Here's Florence in the Live Lounge giving her version.

#3 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"On a Mission" - Katy B

An album that cemented a change in dance/pop music. The Mercury Music Prize nominated album features great vocals and even better production.

#3 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala" - Arctic Monkeys

Alex Turner recently told NME that he had forgotten how to create a 'hit'

#4 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Nostalgia, Ultra" - Frank Ocean

It may be a mixtape but, nonetheless, this is definitely among the albums of the year. For the first time in years, RnB finally has something credible to hang it's jacket on.

Look for the album in 2012

#5 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Suck It and See" - Arctic Monkeys

Alex and Co back on best form with this album and take the #5 spot; an album of true progession and indie bangers.

#5 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Wildfire" - SBTRKT feat Little Dragon

An understated slice of delicious dub, producer - Aaron Jerome takes the #5 spot.

#6 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Charity Starts at Home" - Phonte

Sophisticated rap music from the ex Little Brother member. A song that epitomises the struggle for talented rappers out there... Phonte and 9th working together again is wonderful news.

#6 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"I'm Getting Ready" - Richard Kiwanuka

One of those voices that really makes you stop in your tracks. Presumably, Mr Kiwanuka is for a big year in 2012.

#7 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"Let England Shake" - PJ Harvey

Harvey took home the Mercury Music Prize for the second time with this album. An album about conflict and war that had particular resonance this year.

#7 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"AKA... What a Life" - Noel Gallagher

No post-Oasis hangover for Noel on this track... "I'm gonna take that tiger outside, for a ride"

#8 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"50 Words for Snow" - Kate Bush

A wintry concept album that saw Bush characteristically continue to push the boundaries (the Stephen Fry and Elton John features also are a big tick in the 'plus column')

#8 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"We Found Love" - Rihanna feat Calvin Harris

One of the biggest tracks of the year that saw Rihanna and Harris link up for an Autumnal-floor-filler.

#9 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"A Creature I Don't Know" - Laura Marling

An album that truly is beautiful to listen to. A wise head on young shoulders and voice of such longing.

A remarkable album.

#9 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Cinema" - Benny Benassi Feat Gary Go

A cheeky number that snuck under the radar but soundtracked the Summer.

#10 - LGB Albums of the Year 2011

"James Blake" - James Blake

This bloke topped the album list of 2010 and did not disappoint with his debut offering.

#10 - LGB Singles of the Year 2011

"Gabriel" -  Joe Goddard feat Valentina

Let's start as we mean to go on... a haunting track that saw Goddard step into the solo arena following his incredible work with Hot Chip.

Beastie Boys to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Now, it's late and I really should be in the land of nod but I have just received an email holding some incredible news.

The Beastie Boys are to be inducted with this year's round of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group, that are still going strong, have finally received the honour. Despite the rumours, Rakim and Eric B did not make the cut this year but it is fair to presume that the call is not long away.

Simply awesome news to cap a difficult year for the iconic hip hop collective.

The induction ceremony is to take place on 14th April 2012 in Cleveland. Other artists entering the hall this year include: Guns & Roses, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Freddie King and group Small Faces.

Martin Boyce takes home the Turner Prize 2011

Sculptor - Martin Boyce has been awarded the 2011 Turner Prize during the ceremony held at the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead... the first time that the ceremony has taken place outside of the Tate.

Boyce beat LGB favourite George Shaw, Karla Black and Hilary Lloyd to the prestigious contemporary art award and was awarded the £25,000 prize money by photographer - Mario Testino.

Happy Mondays NOT reforming

Despite rumours that have been circulating today, Happy Mondays have no immediate plans to reunite for a tour.

The Sun ran the story after Sean Ryder cancelled a gig this coming Wednesday in Leicester stating that the legendary band were to reunite in honour of their classic album "Pills n Thrills and Bellyaches"

Unsurprisingly, this was The Sun getting their reach on and stretching a nothing story to it's limits. However, the relationship between Sean Ryder and his brother Paul is apparently "better than it has been for a long time".

Come on guys... I would love to see Bez freaky dancing to open before The Stone Roses at Heaton Park next year!
