Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week, you will have seen the footage of Tupac at Coachella.
Dre and Snoop wowed the crowds with all the hits and, as if the two hip-hop heavyweights headlining wasn't enough, they brought Tupac on stage. The hologram, that was the a production of AV Concepts, was said to have cost in the region of $400,000 and is credited as Dre's vision.
Hologram Tupac performed "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" and is already 'booked' to tour with Dre on, what is believed to be, a world tour.
It is obviously not the first time that hologram technology has been used in live performances (with Gorillaz using hologram technology for their previous tour). However, it is without doubt the best.
It begs the question... who could be next?
What if The Beatles played Glastonbury? What if Bob Marley played Wembley? What if Dave Grohl got to play with Kurt Cobain again? Nina Simone, Biggie Smalls, Buddy Holly, Little Richard... could this really take off???
Personally, if the hologram delivered a live performance, I would definitely pay to see it. And... if this technology can be improved further, this could signal a very exciting new chapter in live music.
Watch this space... very closely
